A trail is more than a line and a distance
Trail descriptions and elevation profiles told users how hard a route would be, but not what they'd actually see along the way: summits, viewpoints, lakes, and other landmarks buried in photos and comments rather than surfaced on the map.
Surfacing the highlights on the map
I designed a way to detect and highlight the most popular waypoints along any trail directly on the map, using aggregated data from the community's own uploaded photos and check-ins. Suddenly, a trail wasn't just a line and a distance. It became a preview of the landmarks worth looking forward to.
