Too much friction for a quick "well done"

Wikiloc's community shares thousands of trails and photos, but the only way to react to someone else's achievement was to leave a written comment, a level of effort many people skipped even when they genuinely wanted to show appreciation for a route or a photo.

One tap, real applause

I designed Clap, a one-tap gesture available on both trails and individual photos, sitting right next to Comment and Save, so showing appreciation takes a fraction of the effort a comment used to. On the trail detail screen, claps are counted alongside ratings and comments from the start.

Closing the loop with notifications

Getting clapped for a trail needed to feel rewarding in the moment, not just a number going up. A push notification announces every new clap, and tapping into it opens the full list of people who clapped, turning a quiet stat into a small, social moment.

Bringing claps to email

Not every user checks push notifications right away, so claps also surface by email, differentiating a clap on a trail from a clap on a specific photo, each linking straight to "see who clapped" or back to the content itself.

Giving users control

Because claps can generate a lot of notifications for popular trails, I added a dedicated preference so users can choose, independently from comments and follows, whether they want to hear about claps on mobile, by email, or both.

Outcome

Clap gave the Wikiloc community a lightweight way to celebrate each other's trails and photos, turning a passive stat into a two-way moment of recognition, without asking anyone to write a single word.
